At Centerboard Guest House, it's not just our logo that's green. We try our best to reduce, reuse and recycle to preserve and sustain our beautiful island. Here are some things The Centerboard is doing to help conserve materials, energy and natural resources:
- We consult with an eco-friendly interior designer for ways in which we can be green without compromising service
- We provide A/C units in season in all the rooms. However, for those who choose to crack a window, we have ceiling fans in all the 1st and 2nd floor guest rooms
- We recycle plastics, metals, and glass and provide a ‘recycling basket’ in each guest room
- We instruct all new staff members in green best practices
- We buy only shade-grown/organic green coffee beans which we receive in large burlap
sacks (which are used to wrap shrubberies during the cold months) and roast fresh in small batches on the premises, eliminating the need to discard coffee containers
- We use citrus-based, non-toxic cleaning and polishing products
- In the Dining Room we only use china plates, glassware, stainless cutlery…no plastics
- We are proud to promote Nantucket Water* in all rooms. It is from the tap and it’s free!
- We use no chlorine bleaches in the laundry
- We send out room confirmations via email unless requested by mail
- Where it has been necessary to replace some carpeting we used more sustainable cork flooring that lasts a life time.
- All stained towels and sheets are cut up into household cleaning rags
- For cutting our modest patch of grass we use a 24-volt battery-charged electric Neuton lawn mower which generates zero emissions and is about a fourth as noisy as a gas-powered mower
- All new painting is done with non-VOC paint
- We are in the process of installing compact fluorescent's to replace incandescent light bulbs. Eventually all lights and lamps in the house will be non-incandescent.
* ABOUT NANTUCKET WATER. The island draws its municipal drinking water from a vast aquifer at several levels ranging from 117 to 140 feet deep. The annual recharge from a yearly average of 43 inches of rainfall more than replenishes the water pumped out for all uses. In 2008 the Nantucket water utility company had zero water quality violations. The water from the tap meets or exceeds all state and federal standards. The utility does not add any chemical to the water supply. On a subjective level, we can attest to the fact that the water tastes no different from any of the “designer” bottled spring waters. |
