Centerboard guests awaken each morning to the tantalizing aroma of a very special brewed coffee. Innkeeper James Blunt roasts small batches of green coffee beans (a secret blend of South East Asian and Caribbean organically grown beans) right on the premises. He then grinds and brews the beans fresh each morning. His signature "Nantucket Fog Lifter" house coffee is guaranteed to clear the cobwebs…fast! A healthful Continental breakfast buffet is served in our high-ceilinged, light-filled dining room each morning from around 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM. Adjust your watch to Nantucket island time and linger over your breakfast before setting out to explore the island. Our Nantucket Bed and Breakfast selections vary from day to day and may include:
- Home-made breads, cakes or muffins
- Assorted cereals
- Yogurt
- Seasonal fruits
- Juice
- House-roasted gourmet coffee
- Tea selections
By town law, 43 of 44 bed and breakfast inns in Nantucket Town can only put out a Continental breakfast; i.e., no meat and potatos. Being law abiding citizens, we strive to stand out from the local lodging crowd by ensuring that as many items as possible are home-made from scratch using as many locally grown, organic ingredients as possible. This means fresh eggs from free-range chickens on the Centerboard owner's Nantucket farm, hand-squeezed oranges for the freshest, sweetest and pulpiest juice, herbs from our garden, locally harvested fresh cranberries for the baked goods and for stiffing into my signature granola ("James's Own Nan-ola"). By summer's onset we will be able to go out to nearby public moors and pasture lands and hand-pick great quantities of blackberries, blueberries, strawberries and raspberries which we present whole on the fruit platters and use in baking breads and cakes and mixed fruit cobblers.
For the house coffee presentation, we roast a secret, exotic blend of green coffee beans right here on the premises using a Swiss-made small-batch drum roaster. We obtain our beans from www.coffeebeansdirect.com in 50-lb. burlaps sacks. In this "green" manner we need not accumulate and discard large amounts of metal and paper containers. Over the winter months, we use the empty burlap sacks to wrap and protect the shrubberies. The broad makeup of our coffee blend is Indonesian, Jamaican and Hawaii fair-trade organic varietals. With our delicious, untreated, pure aquifer water drawn straight from the tap, the coffee pings a bright, clear and light taste (the un-Starbucks) to your palette and then delivers a bracing jolt of caffeine to your system. That is why we call it "James's Own Nantucket Fog-Cutter House Roast."
The fresh, creative, healthful, savory, spa-like breakfast at the Centerboard is one very happy meal, one that will put you on track for another unforgettable day on Nantucket. |
